Anatomy of the AI narrative: why the sector pumps in waves and how to read them
Crypto's AI sector does not live its own life - it lives in the reflected light of the big AI hype. Pump waves arrive from outside, and that makes them partly predictable.
Mechanics of a wave
The trigger is an event in the big AI world: a loud model release, a new chip presentation, a viral product. Capital that cannot buy OpenAI shares looks for a "crypto proxy for AI" - and floods everything with AI in the ticker. The wave cascades: first the sector's majors, then the mid-caps, and at the end - junk with a renamed ticker. When the junk is pumping, the wave is usually ending.
Historical markers
Every major release of the ChatGPT era gave the sector weeks of growth; NVIDIA presentations worked like a pump schedule; viral agent stories spawned entire metas. The pattern is stable: the sector reacts to other people's news more strongly than to its own products.
How to use it
First - the calendar: big AI events are known in advance. Second - the cascade: if the sector's majors have already made their move, chasing junk at the tail of the wave is the worst entry point. Third - the exit: AI hype waves recede as sharply as they arrive. Sector signals - in the AI section and the live feed.
