Why a token pumps BEFORE listing and dumps after: the sell the news mechanics

the crptch team · analytics desk · 2 reading time

The pattern repeats so consistently that it has a name: buy the rumor, sell the news. Rumors of a listing on a major exchange pump the price by tens of percent, and in the first hours after trading opens the token gets dumped - often below the level from which the pump started.

Who sells into the order book to new buyers

The logic is simple. Insiders and early holders bought cheap and waited for an event with a guaranteed inflow of liquidity. A listing is the moment when a mass of retail buyers with money on the exchange looks at the token for the first time. For early holders it's the best exit point: deep order book, hype, a one-click «buy» button for millions of users.

At this moment retail does the opposite - buys on the emotion that «it's about to take off». Statistically, most tokens trade below their first-day listing price within a week.

How to read a listing without emotion

  • A 50-100% rally in the week before the announcement is almost always insider activity or front-running a rumor, not «organic» growth.
  • The first 1-4 hours of trading is a zone of maximum volatility: the market maker is discovering the price, early holders are exiting.
  • If a project is fundamentally interesting - entry after the first week is usually cheaper than entry on listing day.

We track listings in the listings section, and we record verdicts on fresh tokens in the track record - with the price at the time of assessment and a recheck after 24 hours and 7 days.
