Wash trading: how much exchange volume does not exist

the crptch team · analytics desk · 2 reading time

Volume is an exchange's main storefront: venues are ranked by it in aggregators, and it lures both traders and projects seeking listings. So volume gets painted - at scale and for a decade straight: classic studies estimated the share of fake volume on unregulated venues at the overwhelming majority.

Why and how it is painted

Why: ranking positions, selling listings ("we have volume!"), simulating liquidity. How: the venue's own bots run trades against themselves - no risk, no cost, but a pretty tape. The advanced variant - "market making" agreements with projects where the token's volume is written straight into the contract.

How to spot real volume

  • Depth versus volume: the venue shows "billions in turnover" while pennies sit within ±2% of mid - the volume is painted: real trading leaves depth behind.
  • The spread: a suspiciously perfect tight spread over dead depth is a bot decoration.
  • The time profile: real volume breathes with sessions and news; a flat 24/7 sawtooth is a script.
  • Reconciliation with on-chain flows: an exchange with a gigantic "turnover" and negligible deposits/withdrawals is mathematically impossible.

The rule: liquidity is order book depth and the slippage on your size, not a number in an aggregator.
