Political tokens: when elections become a trading pair
Politics and memes have merged into a separate genre: tokens betting on candidates, "official" politician launches, memes on political events. The genre has its own mechanics, distinct from regular memes.
Genre Features
- Built-in calendar: elections, debates, inaugurations - the volatility schedule is known in advance. A political meme is an option on a date with a known expiration.
- Proxy bets: tokens move with candidates' odds (and with prediction markets like Polymarket) - an external "fundamental" appears for verification: the divergence between a meme's price and a candidate's odds is a measurable inefficiency.
- Event-driven crashes: a candidate's loss zeroes out their memes within minutes - a binary outcome in its purest form.
- Official launches (the TRUMP genre) added a conflict of interest of historic scale: a token issuer simultaneously makes political decisions affecting the crypto market. This is no longer a meme, but an instrument with a regulatory tail.
Player Rules
Trade the calendar, not the belief: political memes are event-driven trades with dates. Cross-check with prediction markets - they're more sober than CT. And remember the genre's main risk: "officialness" doesn't protect against the classic distribution - insiders of political tokens dump just like everyone else (see the LIBRA case).
