How to check that a GameFi project is actually being played: metrics without the marketing
GameFi is the sector where metrics lie most often: "active users" are inflated by bots farming a drop, and "item trading volume" is wash trading. Cross-checks help separate the living from the painted.
Metrics that are hard to fake
- Retention: how many players come back after a week and a month. Bots farm daily and identically, real people - unevenly. A flat activity chart with no weekends is a farm's signature.
- External platforms: a living game leaves traces outside the blockchain - streams, a Discord with gameplay talk (not drop talk), YouTube guides. A game "with a million players" and not a single stream is a phantom.
- Economy without emission: what share of player income comes from other players rather than token rewards. A healthy proportion is the sector's rarity.
- Trader-to-player ratio: if the addresses trading the token outnumber those playing by an order of magnitude - it is a financial product with a game legend.
Most GameFi tokens already fail the second check. That does not mean the sector is dead: it means the filter has to be harsh. Our reviews - in the section, verdicts are logged in the track record.
